Babes in Toyland was an American all-female grunge/punk trio formed in Minneapolis in 1987. Members included Kat Bjelland(guitar and vocals), Lori Barbero (drums) and Michelle Leon (bass). Michelle left the band in 1992 and was replaced by Maureen Herman. The band split and reformed throughout the 1990s, losing their record label when Maureen Herman left the band in 1996. Due to legal issues and make-ups and break-ups… the band played their last shoes in 2002 but stopped using the name (Babes In Toyland) after Barbero and Herman raised legal issues.
The band formed in 2006 as a joke, played a house show and were asked to open for The Hiss on the strength of their performance. The name was chosen for its vulgarity – an irreverent take on abortions – though all band members are pro-choice.
The Coathangers
Their playfulness continues into their songs, with titles such as ’Don’t Touch My Shit, Nestle In My Boobies and Mustache Ride. Despite their low expectations, no one seems to be dismissing them as a novely act. A live demo is in circulation and upcoming releases are due from Die Slaughterhaus and Rob’s House Records.

Female rock trio Girl in a Coma formed in San Antonio, Texas in 2001. While Nina is often referred to as “the female version of Morrissey,” the band as a whole has been compared to The Smiths, Interpol and the Pixies. Drawing heavily from these influences (the band’s name, Girl in a Coma, comes from the classic Smiths song “Girlfriend in a Coma”), the Girls have managed to create a sound and style that not only pays homage to their heroes, but is uniquely their own.
Girl In A Coma
In early 2006, the Girls found themselves back in New York City where they were introduced to two of their biggest fans Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna of Blackheart Records.
Currently the girls have been touring with Tegan & Sara. Check out their tour dates here.
The Veronicas is a band consisting of identical twin sisters Jessica Louise Origliasso and Lisa Marie Origliasso (born in Brisbane, Australia) but currently reside in Los Angeles. They were signed up by Warner Bros. Records in 2004 and write their own songs, they’ve also written for the likes of t.A.T.u.
The Veronicas
The Veronicas dislike being called a female duo, “We like being called a band or group. We don’t want to be a pop duo group with two girls singing about relationships, we have everything that a rock band would have, so we are a band”, says Lisa.
I heard the Veronica’s when I was in Australia, they’re one of my favorite bands (and I say band!) they write their own lyrics which is always a bonus, they’re media savy too, if that’s the right term to use, as they’re often in the press in their home land Australia especially when it comes to their love lives…
Jess & MTV VJ Ruby Rose.
Jess has been spotted kissing with MTV VJ Ruby Rose, although it is reported that it was only a stunt.
The couple were first spotted locking lips in March at the Cleo Bachelor of the Year Awards after-party and then again at a MAC fashion week after-party in April. At the Australian MTV awards, upon accepting the Australian Artist Music Award, Jess thanked Ruby for “being really hot”.
Despite the recurrences, Ruby is quick to shut down rumours the pair could ever be an item, saying “no, I’ve got a super hot girlfriend and I want to be with her.”
