From The Archive: Babes In Toyland

Babes In Toyland

Babes In Toyland

Babes in Toyland was an American all-female / trio formed in Minneapolis in 1987. Members included Kat Bjelland (guitar and vocals), Lori Barbero (drums) and Michelle Leon (bass). Michelle left the band in 1992 and was replaced by Maureen Herman. The band split and reformed throughout the 1990s, losing their record label when Maureen Herman left the band in 1996. Due to legal issues and make-ups and break-ups… the band played their last shoes in 2002 but stopped using the name (Babes In Toyland) after Barbero and Herman raised legal issues.

The Coathangers

The Coathangers
The Coathangers

The band formed in 2006 as a joke, played a house show and were asked to open for The Hiss on the strength of their performance. The name was chosen for its vulgarity – an irreverent take on abortions – though all band members are pro-choice.

The Coathangers

The Coathangers

Their playfulness continues into their songs, with titles such as ’Don’t Touch My Shit, Nestle In My Boobies and Mustache Ride. Despite their low expectations, no one seems to be dismissing them as a novely act. A live demo is in circulation and upcoming releases are due from Die Slaughterhaus and Rob’s House Records.

Scream Club

Scream Club

To be honest, I’m not usually a fan of rap, but that doesn’t mean I’m aginst the genre all together, as it can be a positive thing when done in the right way… or if it’s not taken quite so seriously, like Scream Club…

Girl In A Coma

Girl In A Coma

Girl In A Coma

Female rock trio Girl in a Coma formed in San Antonio, Texas in 2001. While Nina is often referred to as “the female version of Morrissey,” the band as a whole has been compared to The Smiths, Interpol and the Pixies. Drawing heavily from these influences (the band’s name, Girl in a Coma, comes from the classic Smiths song “Girlfriend in a Coma”), the Girls have managed to create a sound and style that not only pays homage to their heroes, but is uniquely their own.

In early 2006, the Girls found themselves back in New York City where they were introduced to two of their biggest fans Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna of Blackheart Records.

Currently the girls have been touring with Tegan & Sara. Check out their tour dates here.

Inara George

Inara George

In 2005 Inara released her debut album ‘All Rise’. Produced and largely co-written by Michael Andrews (of the ‘Donnie Darko’ score), ‘All Rise’ is a collection of lush, intimately crafted songs. Almost all of the songs are written by Inara George herself. It does contain a cover of ‘Fools in Love’, a Joe Jackson song. She is currently working on 2 projects: George is Jones and The Bird and the Bee.

Butterfly Boucher

Butterfly Boucher

Butterfly Boucher is an Australian singer/songwriter. Butterfly’s sister had a band, The Mercy Bell, in which Butterfly played bass guitar. In 2004 and 2005, Boucher toured the U.S., opening for Sarah McLachlan and Barenaked Ladies.

Butterfly Boucher

Butterfly Boucher

Butterfly currently resides in the United States. She released her first track of the album, “I Can’t Make Me,” in the UK first. It did poorly. However, when she released that track along with “Another White Dash,” her U.S. success was assured. While a second album is in the pipeline, there is no official date for its release.

The more I hear her voice, the more I want to listen to her music! It’s understated singer/songwriters like this that I appreciate and feel like it’s worth spending money on; when you buy the music, because it’s something personal they’ve poured their heart and soul into, unlike some commercial rubbish out there. This is what real talent should sound like.

The Veronicas

The Veronicas

The Veronicas

The Veronicas is a band consisting of identical twin sisters Jessica Louise Origliasso and Lisa Marie Origliasso (born in Brisbane, Australia) but currently reside in Los Angeles. They were signed up by Warner Bros. Records in 2004 and write their own songs, they’ve also written for the likes of t.A.T.u.

The Veronicas

The Veronicas dislike being called a female duo, “We like being called a band or group. We don’t want to be a pop duo group with two girls singing about relationships, we have everything that a rock band would have, so we are a band”, says Lisa.

I heard the Veronica’s when I was in Australia, they’re one of my favorite bands (and I say band!) they write their own lyrics which is always a bonus, they’re media savy too, if that’s the right term to use, as they’re often in the press in their home land Australia especially when it comes to their love lives…

Jess has been spotted kissing with MTV VJ Ruby Rose, although it is reported that it was only a stunt.

The couple were first spotted locking lips in March at the Cleo Bachelor of the Year Awards after-party and then again at a MAC fashion week after-party in April. At the Australian MTV awards, upon accepting the Australian Artist Music Award, Jess thanked Ruby for “being really hot”.

Despite the recurrences, Ruby is quick to shut down rumours the pair could ever be an item, saying “no, I’ve got a super hot girlfriend and I want to be with her.”

Crush Of The Week: Stine Bramsen

30 07 2008

Stine Bramsen.

The first of our Weekly Crushes, 21 year old Stine Bramsen. Lead singer and only female member of 6 peice Danish band Alphabeat. According to Stine’s personal myspace page, she’s “not sure” of her orrientation…

Alphabeat

From stv.tv:

Do you find being the only girl in the band a good or a bad thing?
For me, it’s a really, really good thing. It’s much more simple to be around boys, there’s much less drama, complications. Everything’s just a bit more easy. Girls can be a bit dramatic at times.

Do you feel you get a bit more attention because you’re the only female?
No, not really. I probably did the first couple of years but now we’ve been together for six years and I’m really just one of the boys.

Do you ever miss having no one to have a girly chat with?
Of course I miss my close girlfriends from Denmark and I just call them and the boys are pretty girly so you can have a girly talk with them once in a while.

Anders was also trying to tell me about the best parts of Denmark and he came up with pigs and bacon. Can you think of anything to trump that?
We have a lot of pretty ladies, as well. The girls in Denmark are a lot prettier than the UK girls, I think.

How do you rate on that scale?
I’m just somewhere in the middle of pretty girls in Denmark. There are a lot of really pretty girls.

Aimee Mann

30 07 2008

Aimee Mann

Aimee Mann was born in Richmond, Virginia, and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but dropped out to sing with her first punk rock band, the young snakes; the band released the EP Bark Along with the Young Snakes in 1982, and a compilation album was issued in 2004. In 1983, seeking a return to “sweetness and melody”, she co-founded with Berklee classmate and boyfriend Michael Hausman the new wave band ’Til Tuesday, which achieved minor success in 1985 with its first album, Voices Carry. In 1993 Mann released Whatever, her first solo album. Promotion suffered due to the collapse of her label, Imago. While only a small hit, the album was critically praised, and paved the way for her next release, 1995’s I’m with Stupid, through Geffen Records. Again, reviews were positive, but sales were weak. Mann has released a total of 10 solo albums most recent being ‘@#%&*! Smilers
‘ released earlier this year.
